A

Lee Assam brings to the table 15+ years of programming and development experience. He has a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a master's degree in Computer Science. He has designed iPhone applications for companies and also incorporates iPhone apps into micro-controller design with Arduino and Rasberry Pi. Lee also lectures part time at Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University teaching an array of classes from Web Development with PHP and MySQL, Micro-controller programming using Arduino to software development with Python. He possesses a wealth of knowledge not only in software engineering but also in user interface design.

  • Leisa Barbour received her BA in child development from Rockford University and her MA from Illinois State University in curriculum and instruction. She has been teaching in Unit 5 for 17 years at multiple grade levels and has been the gifted lead teacher for her school for the last 14 years.
  • Polly Bedford Cooking meals for her family, entertaining friends and letting new techniques or recipes take her where they will is all part of the journey that sustains Polly (much to the dismay of her husband who has happily eaten the same lunch for 10+ years!). As owner of Hedgehog Kitchen, Polly teaches cooking classes that allow students to explore lifestyle changes, save money and create truly satisfying meals. Polly uses simple ingredients with an emphasis on local, seasonal and organic foods that shine on their own with little assistance from fledgling cooks. She is thrilled to guide students to the pleasures of food prepared by their own hands.
  • Cheryl Belligio received her BS and MS in Business Education from Northern Illinois University. She taught in the Chicago suburbs and overseas in Italy for the Department of Defense. She also helped establish the Secretarial Studies Program at Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education in Australia.
  • Jill Belongia has been a fitness enthusiast all her life. She has been teaching group fitness and yoga classes since 2003. She is a Senior Master Trainer with YogaFit, holds her Group Fitness Certification with ACE, and is an E-RYT 200 with Yoga Alliance.
  • Shelly Beyers has 20 years teaching experience at Saunemin Grade School. She has taught math to 5th through 8th graders, including Algebra, for the past 19 years. She also coaches boys and girls track in the spring and enjoys being outdoors.
  • Paul Bihn has a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Truman State University and has worked at State Farm as an analyst for almost 24 years. He has created religious Android game applications such as Memory Cathedral, and Book of Revelation. He has also published an Android board game called Tablero. He loves to program and teach programming.
  • Diane Boeck is a Certified Teacher of Hatha Yoga through a 200 hour home study course. She currently teaches classes at Heartland Community College and in other locations in Bloomington/Normal. She also teaches Water Aerobics. Diane has found personal benefit in both yoga and water exercise. She enjoys sharing these exercises for the benefit of others. She is also a University of Illinois Master Gardener.
  • Kay Bowen has worked with computers for the last 40 years. She worked at State Farm Insurance for 17 years before coming to Heartland Community College.
  • Joey Bracco received his BS from Illinois State University and is currently working on his MS in Project Management at ISU. He enjoys learning about new technologies and projects that run on Apple products. He currently works for the Human Resource Department at ISU and the board for the Bloomington-Normal Human Resource Council.
  • Charles Bristow is an Instructional Developer at ISU's Center for Teaching, Learning & Technology, where his responsibilities include teaching workshops on web design and editing. He has been working with websites for over 15 years.
  • Carol Burroughs is a certified Financial Planner® and Principal of Forward Financial Planning, LLC in Normal where she provides guidance in investments, retirement, insurance, education funding, and estate planning for individuals and small businesses.
  • Lawrence Butts is a retired auto worker who is an active 3D designer and 3D printing enthusiast.

  • Roy & Judy Chaplin are husband and wife business partners that together have over 40 years of experience in the upholstering business. They own Chaplin's Upholstery and Woodworking Center in Normal.
  • Betty Howell Cleeton has taught French at both the college and high school level. Her M.A. is from Middlebury College's program in Paris. She has lived, studied and worked in France for more than 13 years, most of that time in Provence. She has worked there for college study abroad programs. She is eager to share her interest in the French culture and language with all of her students!
  • Josh Colon, Heartland Community College and Illinois State University graduate, brings his successful baseball career back to Heartland as the hitting instructor for Community Education. At Heartland Community College he hit .349 as a freshman and continued his success by hitting .391 as a sophomore. He also led the Hawks with 101 assists and helped turn 17 double plays and gained All- Conference honors. Josh continued his success at ISU where he was a part of the 2010 conference championship team and the 2011 team which set the school record for wins with a record of 35-16. After success as a player, he returned to ISU in 2012 as a volunteer coach who worked with both hitters and infielders. The ISU team had one of the highest batting averages in the nation with .297 team average and one of the highest fielding percentages in the Missouri Valley Conference with a .979 fielding percentage. 
  • Jennifer Coombs a Planner for Technisource. She has certifications as a Microsoft Office Specialist, a Master Instructor of Microsoft Office, and a certified Technical Trainer.
  • Jenny Crones has over 20 years experience working with computers. She is also a local artist. She has a BFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and received her MFA at Illinois State University. She will have you laughing and learning at the same time.

  • Amy DeFalco is a sign language interpreter with 13 years experience. She has an AAS in Interpreting and a BS in Deaf Education.
  • Anuja Deshpande is a Diet Consultant from India and moved to Bloomington in 2003. She holds her bachelor’s degree in Life Science and has been practicing Ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arrangement) for over a decade. Anuja believes Ikebana is an effective therapy for relieving stress. She is passionate about healthy eating, yoga, creative art, photography and jewelry making.
  • Matthew Donovan is an E-RYT 200 with Yoga Alliance and currently working on pursuing the 500 hour professional certification. He has been practicing yoga for six years and teaching yoga for two years. Matt is teaching Gentle & Restorative Yoga at Heartland Community College, the Bloomington YMCA and also teaches free community classes in the area. Matthew’s deep love for yoga is present in his gentle and nurturing approach to teaching.
  • Michael Donovan is an Adult Probation Officer with over 20 years experience in the field. He is a lifelong Martial Artist holding a 4th Degree Black Belt in Karate and a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He has over 25 years teaching experience and specializes in women's self-defense and personal safety.

  • Sybil Fears received her BS and MSA in Accounting from Illinois State University. She is a CPA registered in the State of Illinois. She has been teaching accounting and business courses since 1999 in addition to working at several local CPA firms during that time.
  • Paul Fowler is the Lead Teacher and Director of Blue Lotus Thai Healing Studies in Chicago. After spending nearly a year in Thailand, studying with Pichest Boonthamme, perhaps the greatest living teacher of the art, he began teaching Thai massage in 2001. He goes back to Thailand often to reconnect and deepen his practice and understanding. He has been directing and teaching at Blue Lotus since it’s founding seven years ago.

  • Tracy Gallagher has been teaching Pilates in Bloomington-Normal for 10 years. She enjoys teaching others how to strengthen and change their bodies and has been teaching Community Education students these skills for the past two years.
  • Janet Giugler studied art at ISU with an emphasis in fibers as an art medium earning her BA in art education. She worked as a production studio weaver at Nantucket Looms, Nantucket, MA, a production designer for Fox Cities Artisans with a weaving staff of eight, taught credit courses at the University of Wis. Fox Valley Center, organized the staff for Sievers and taught weaving there in Washington Island, WI. She has also taught private and community classes in fibers for many years. Janet has exhibited her fiber art in many national juried shows including the American Crafts Museum in NYC. She is now active in local fiber guilds and was also active in other parts of America while continuing to learn, practice and teach fiber arts to all ages.

  • Greg Halbleib is the sports director of WJBC Radio in Bloomington and the radio play-by-play voice of the Normal CornBelters. Greg is a 32-year broadcast veteran, and is also the radio play-by-play voice of Bloomington PrairieThunder hockey and the television voice of Missouri Valley Conference volleyball. He has won several broadcasting awards and is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
  • Ben Hauck pursued a successful career as an environmental engineer for nearly a decade, then picked up his first brush at a Tucson Parks and Recreation class in the winter of 2002 and immediately discovered his true passion. Ben’s artistic mission is to awaken individuals to their potential, to bring out the best in people, to leave every single person that views his art with a sense of greatness, wonder and excitement about themselves. He brings his mission to his art instruction as well, always helping his students grow both in their art and in their life outside of art. Ben designs his classes to be fun and inspiring and he always guides his students to discover the best in themselves.
  • David Haynes has taught music for over 30 years all over the eastern United States. He has a great enthusiasm and love for music.
  • Cathy Hempstead has taught various Ballroom, Latin, and Nightclub styles of social partnership dancing since 1996. She owns her own dance studio, Dance Partners, where she teaches intermediate and advanced dance classes.
  • Gina Henry-Cook, owner of Go Global Inc., teaches travel classes in over 86 cities nationwide, has traveled to over 80 countries and 40 states, and is the author of many travel publications, books, DVDs & CDs.
  • Eric C. Hoss has been studying ways to improve interviewing skills for over 25 years and in a tough employment market has coached thousands of students on how to remove doubt and get the job they want. Eric is the author of Removing Doubt in an Interview a book that is an innovative and successful approach to job interviewing that shows how to remove doubt in the eyes of the interviewer. Eric is currently in management at State Farm Insurance and has a master’s degree in business administration from Illinois State University.
  • Cindy Houser has a M.S.W. degree from the University of Illinois and is a licensed clinical social worker. She completed her yoga teacher training through Feel Your Best Yoga and is registered as a yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance at the 200 hr. level.
  • Anna Hubbard is an AFAA certified group exercise instructor since 2012. She also holds several specialty certifications such as Zumba, PiYo Strength and TurboKick. She loves making each class a party while burning calories, toning muscles and increasing cardiovascular endurance.

  • Kathryn Johnson is the Assistant Director at PATH, Inc. She received her MA in Gerontology from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She is a certified trainer for the “Take Charge of Your Health: Live Well, Be Well” also known nationally as the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. She currently manages PATH’s Senior Services program and coordinates the Caregiver Advisory Services for DeWitt, Livingston and McLean counties.
  • Zac Johnson played 3rd base at both Heartland Community College and Illinois State University. His ISU batting average was .320 with 29 doubles and 13 homeruns. He was also an All-MWAC selection at 3rd base at HCC and a first team 3rd base All Missouri Valley Conference Selection at ISU. Zac is currently a biology major at ISU with plans to attend medical school.
  • Greg Joyce is a professional magician who has been instructing youth magic programs and performing stage magic and close-up magic for over 15 years. He has developed a very creative and enjoyable magic course which has been enjoyed by hundreds of students over the years, giving them the knowledge and confidence to be their own magical entertainer.

  • Josh Kauten enters into his fifth year as the Heartland Hawks' pitching coach. Under Josh's instruction, his pitching staffs have compiled an impressive 3.28 ERA.  In addition, Heartland has led the Midwest Athletic Conference in ERA every year of his tenure. In those four years as pitching coach he has produced 17 Division 1 pitchers, 3 All-Americans, and 2 MLB Drafts. Josh pitched at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa before transferring to Illinois State where he pitched for two seasons.  He earned honors at Kirkwood, as well as, Male Scholar Athlete of the Year at ISU in 2003. Following his collegiate career, he was the 11th round draft pick for the Detroit Tigers in the 2004 Major League Amateur Draft. Josh spent the two seasons split between the West Michigan White Caps and the Lakeland Tigers. He spent the next 2 years of his pro career in Independent Baseball with the Lincoln Saltdogs and the El Paso Diablos of the American Association League.  He finished his pro career with a 3.50 ERA.
  • Tonya Keach, certified in Kripalu and prenatal yoga, began practicing yoga in 1997 and teaching classes in 2001. Her classes blend postures & breathing, as well as reflection, intention, and the occasional chanting. This brings a meditative quality to her teaching style. Tonya’s classes guide students to trust their boundless inner wisdom and surrender to the flow of life moving through them, as them. Students are reminded that yoga is not merely a practice, but also a path. This helps to inspire her students to carry the peace of their practice into their lives, and into the world.
  • Kristi Kern is Graphic Designer and Coordinator of Photography at Heartland Community College and Adjunct Professor for the digital media class DesignFUSION. She also runs a small design business.
  • Terri Keys is a former programmer/web designer for Illinois Central College. An adjunct faculty member with ICC for the past eleven years, she teaches in the Business, Hospitality and Information Systems Department. She also works for District 709 running a computer lab for Jefferson Elementary School. She has started technology clubs for the district at both Jefferson Elementary and Morton Junior High.
  • Otis Kindle is an automotive instructor and vocational educator at Distric 87 Public Schools. He received a master’s degree from Illinois State University and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
  • Denise Kozell has been a Master Dog Groomer for 10 years. She is also a Licensed Investigator for Illinois Department of Agriculture. Denise is a true animal lover and uses her background in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement and Animal Sciences to keep animals well cared for and safe.
  • Robin Krutke is the owner and primary instructor the horseback riding facility, Hidden Hill Farms in Carlock. She has over 25 years of experience with horses including teaching, training and showing. Hidden Hills Farm is focused on providing safe, high-quality service, and customer satisfaction for kids and adults.

  • Jonathan Lindsey received his Master's in Clinical-Counseling from Illinois State University and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Research Psychology from Walden University. He is currently in private practice, working with a wide range of concerns from addiction and depression to grief and life-change. He has been counseling individuals in lifestyle changes and recovery living since 2006.

  • Ron Maier is a licensed counselor with over 30 years experience in universities, a community behavioral health center, and private practice.
  • Mary McMahon is a faculty member at Heartland Community College. She teaches courses for the Business Essentials program. Mary earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Illinois University.
  • Eric Micheletti General Manager and Golf Professional at All Seasons Golf Learning Center has been a Golf Professional for 23 years in the Bloomington/Normal area and has been involved with Heartland Community College, Illinois State University, State Farm Insurance, Country Insurance, Mitsubishi Motors, and many other group instruction programs, along with thousands of individual lessons ranging from juniors, women, beginners, and advanced players.
  • Dr. Susan Mitchell is the clinic director of Mitchell Family Chiropractic and has been a Doctor of Chiropractic for 17 years. She lectures nationwide on a variety of wellness topics. Her passion is to empower families to live at their optimum health and happiness through natural means.
  • Dana Mollohan currently works as a senior business analyst and as a part-time tax accountant. She earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from Eastern Illinois University and her MBA from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She is a registered CPA and has over 15 years of financial and business analysis experience. Dana also has a love of dance and performing. She has studied various forms of middle eastern (belly dance) under various Central Illinois instuctors for the last 7 years and currently performs with Troupe Zahava.

  • Marcia Nagy has a bachelor's degree from ISU in business education. She has previously worked in education and development for State Farm. She actively designs and sells fiber art at various art shows in Illinois and has taught private and group knitting classes for many years.
  • Deborah Niemann-Boehle In 2002, Deborah dragged her professor-husband and three kids from the Chicago suburbs to a 32-acre homestead on a creek in the middle of nowhere. As clueless city slickers, they made a lot of mistakes, learned a little, and had a lot of fun. Among the many homemade foods she produces, Deborah has been making cheese for ten years using milk from her own herd of Nigerian dwarf dairy goats. In addition, she has authored two books Homegrown and Handmade and EcoFrugal, both endorsed by Mother Earth News magazine as part of their Wiser Living Series.
  • Alex Nigro is a NCSF Certified Personal Trainer and is ready to begin helping clients reach their health and fitness goals. He has competed as a natural body builder and is a former wrestler, so he understands what it takes to condition and train your body. Alex’s goals are to help you improve your level of physical fitness by following a personalized workout regimen. He offers instruction on proper form, provides motivation and constructive feedback, and will help you reach your goal whether it is adding muscle, losing weight or developing a healthier lifestyle.

  • Paul Peacock is a teacher at Lexington High School in computer education courses including computer applications, yearbook design and programming. He holds a master's degree in Applied Computer Science from Illinois State University.
  • Greg Peterson has taught computer classes at Heartland Community Education for over 15 years. He is employed as a Training Analyst at State Farm Insurance and has earned the CIT (Certified Instructional Technologist) designation. Greg previously owned a computer training company.
  • Janet Peterson is a graduate of Augustana College, Rock Island and has an Interior Design degree from Black Hawk College. She has been an interior designer for 25 years and is co-owner of Sugarbaker Design Ltd., Bloomington.

  • Karen Ridinger is an accomplished Usui Reiki Master, supporting over 400 students in Illinois. She created Natural Pathways Holistic Center and Reiki ReSource to share this gift with the community. Reiki is a relaxing hands-on balancing of the energy systems within your body. Karen also aids woman in labor, delivery, postpartum, and to ease the transition process of hospice patients and their families. She also begins her 4th year as president of the Healing Arts Network of McClean Co.
  • Raegan Rinchiuso is the Marketing and Public Information Specialist at Heartland Community College and has five years experience in non-profit marketing. She has an advertising degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is pursuing her MBA at Illinois State University.
  • Nancy Roop is a Certified Travel Counselor and Destination Specialist in Normal. She has worked in the travel and tourism industry for the past 30 years. Her personal and professional travel experience spans 90 countries on 5 continents.
  • Doug Rosenbaum has been officiating football for over 30 years and is starting his 13th year as a Side Judge with the NFL. He has officiated on the high school level, Division 3 college level, the Big Ten conference, the Canadian Football League, the NFL Europe League and the Arena Indoor League during his career.

  • Patt Schneider began belly dancing 10 years ago after discovering belly dance through a Parks & Rec class. In 2008, she became part of the Synergy Sirens Dance Company and taught beginner and intermediate dance classes for 5 years before opening her own dance studio, Odyssey World Music & Dance Studio in 2013. Patt has found belly dance to be a place where she can express her creative side through movement and music, as well as finding a community of women with similar desires. She is inspired by all forms of music and incorporates many different styles of musical forms into her classes. She strives to bring to her students the love of movement through dance as well as the importance of simply having fun in a supportive, creative atmosphere. Patt has also developed a unique fitness class incorporating belly dance movements to introduce the dance form to women (or men!) who seek a workout that is fun and interesting.
  • Jaime Skaggs is a technology enthusiast and has a specific interest in sharing and managing digital photographs to ensure they are preserved for future generations. Jaime has a degree in Information Technology from Bradley University and is a technical analyst at State Farm.
  • Shirley Splittstoesser has co-authored a cookbook and written several magazine stories about chefs and their recipes. She and her husband, Walter, wrote and published their memoirs as a gift to their three children.
  • Karen Sternberg was a New York-based actress, producer and casting associate for 15 years. She's performed Shakespeare in Central Park, classics in Times Square, and new works in the vibrant downtown theatre community. Having experienced both the anxiety of auditioning and the stress of casting a show, Karen has great insight for actors of all levels hoping to leave their mark in the audition room.

  • Claudia Terrance began folk dancing at the University of California at Berkeley during her college years and she has continued to dance ever since. She is excited to share the folk traditions with others through her International Folk Dancing classes. For over 30 years she has been a member of several dance groups including two international groups and one grouping focusing on Greek dances.
  • Dee Thompson majored in Fashion Merchandising at Western Illinois University. Dee is a costumer for Bloomington High School's Drama department, and has worked with Normal Parks and Recreation’s Summer Theater program, the Peoria Opera, for CATS, and for MOVIN' ON during their Bloomington performances.
  • Kristen Throm graduated from Illinois State University with a Technology Education degree and has taught Integrated Technology at Bloomington Jr. High for 9 years. She will be teaching movie making and Lego classes this summer through the YEP program at Heartland.
  • Mike Tomlianovich runs bridge club games in Bloomington-Normal and teaches bridge for various skill levels at both Heartland and Richland Community Colleges. Mike is an ACBL silver life master player with 1,535 master points to his credit.
  • Troy Tomlinson parents owned 2 grocery stores, where he worked cutting meat and setting up produce displays. From that experience, he enrolled at The Culinary School of Kendall College and joined a company called Lettuce Entertain You as a cook. He was with Lettuce for 10 years, opening four restaurants with them. He joined Biaggi’s in 2004, has worked in four of their locations and is currently the Chef Partner in Bloomington IL.

  • Kerry Urquizo is an ESL Specialist at Heartland Community College. She teaches a variety of ESL courses such as ESL Survival Workplace Skills, Academic ESL, ESL Parenting, and American Pronunciation and Business ESL.

  • Traci Verdery has a BA degree from Augustana College in Business Administration and a BS degree from ISU in Business Education. She teaches Computer Skills full-time in Unit 5. Traci has a passion for education and leveraging technology to engage others in unlocking their learning potential. In her free time, Traci enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and two dogs.

  • Cathy Walker-Bilow is a landscape specialist at Grieder Sod and Landscaping. She is also President of Kid Conscious Lawn Care, a local company dedicated to the development of sustainable lawn care products and practices. She has a BS and MS from the University of Illinois.
  • Richard Watts purchased his first domain in 1999. Richard attained his MBA in 2004 in e-commerce. In 2010, he founded DotComSocial, LLC, a custom social media platform/business page design and social media consultanting agency to assist small businesses and community organizations realize the potential benefits of social media as a new marketing channel when implemented properly.
  • Tiffany Worth, CPA, received her BA in Accounting from Eastern Illinois University. She has over 20 years of accounting experience in various industries. She was a staff accountant and QuickBooks consultant with J.M. Abbott & Associates for 7 years. She is currently a Senior Financial Analyst for Eaton Corporation.
  • Bernie Wrezinski is the Director of Midwest Operations for the Foundation for Financial Education (F3E). He attended Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, as well as the United States Military Academy at West Point. Bernie is a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. Following his academic and military service, Bernie turned his attention to the financial services industry in 1977, and has been educating people in this field ever since. He is committed to helping retirees stay on top of the options available to them to ensure a secure and comfortable retirement.
