Heartland Community College will posthumously recognize the impact and influence of Joseph E. McCauley, associate professor of Art & Humanities, in an exhibition at the College titled "Artwork by Joe McCauley." The exhibition will run January 31 through February 27 in the Academic Support Center, located on the first floor of the Student Commons Building on the Raab Road campus, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 4. Regular ASC hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 9:30 p.m.

In addition to the exhibit, a collection of McCauley's art and musings will be available for pre-order. "The Tactile and the Intellectual" features more than 100 of McCauley's sketches, and is being sold at $45 for a dust jacket version and $48 for an image wrap version. Books are expected to arrive on campus in late February. Checks only will be accepted, payable to Heartland Faculty Association, Local #6038. All proceeds will go toward the Joe McCauley Art Scholarship Fund at HCC.

John Ernst, professor II of Communication & Film Studies, wrote the introduction to the book. A brief excerpt explains "In his art and in his life, Joe McCauley was a true original, a deeply intellectual man with a rich sense of humor, and a wide breadth of passions. He will be sorely missed, but this book brings part of him to us."

McCauley, 57, was a member of the College's original faculty, which first offered classes in fall 1991. He held master's and bachelor's fine arts degrees in painting from the University of Illinois-Champaign. Throughout his 18 years as an art educator at Heartland, he taught and influenced thousands of students with his unique perspectives on art and life in his art courses, which included Basic Drawing, Art Appreciation, History of Art II and History of Modern Art. McCauley was found dead in his home August 21, 2009.
