Student Engagement accepting applications for student leadership positions

HAC members

HCC's Student Government Association (SGA) and the Heartland Activities Committee (HAC) are looking for students to become involved in leadership roles for the 2016-17 academic year.

When you get involved in the SGA or HAC, you share in the accomplishments of Heartland organizations. You'll get an educational opportunity that can develop your skills in:

  • Group interaction
  • Management
  • Event planning
  • Budgeting
  • Negotiation
  • Time management

You'll represent the students of HCC and/or offer educational programs to members of the campus community.

Positions also offer some amount of a tuition waiver.

About SGA

SGA is the official voice of the Heartland Community College student body. As members of student government, the leaders of this group have the opportunity to meet with the Heartland Community College administration, representing the issues and concerns of HCC students.  Recent projects that the Student Government has worked on include:

About HAC

HAC is responsible for planning and presenting non-academic entertainment and educational programs. The types of programs vary from year to year, as entertainment trends and students change.  Types of programs presented include:

  • Lunchtime concert series and Bingo
  • Family movie series
  • Humans vs Zombies
  • Flag football and 3 on 3 basketball tournaments

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours at Heartland Community College during the time of involvement
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 prior to assuming the position and maintain a GPA that is at least this level throughout time of involvement

Position Responsibilities

SGA President
  • Ensure the efficient operation of the SGA
  • Attend meetings of the SGA, as outlined in the attendance policy portion of the SGA by-laws
  • Preside over all Student Government Association Executive Board and Student Senate Meetings
  • Exercise the power to veto on all SGA actions as he/she deems necessary
  • Appoint all committees of the SGA, as well as Committee Chairpersons, with the exception of standing committees, in accordance with the SGA By-laws
  • Vote in the SGA in case of a tie
  • Preside over impeachment hearing should the Vice President be impeached
  • Act as the designated representative for the SGA as a whole, including purposes of communications, with the advisement of the SGA Advisor(s), or delegate this power to another member of the Executive Board when deemed necessary
  • Serve as an ambassador for Heartland Community College as needed
  • Prepare a monthly written report providing updates on the initiatives and happenings of the Student Government Association to be submitted to the Director of Student Development
  • Attend the bimonthly Illinois Board of Higher Education-Student Advisory Committee meetings as voting representative unless otherwise delegated.  At minimum the following meetings are to be attended:  September/October, March/April, and two others of their choosing
  • Not serve as a club liaison during their term of office
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
SGA Vice President
  • Promote the SGA among the HCC student body, by coordinating public relations and marketing efforts
  • Coordinate SGA sponsored service and community outreach events
  • Coordinate a thorough and comprehensive process for the application and interview process for incoming SGA officers
  • Attend meetings of the SGA, as outlined in the attendance policy portion of the SGA by-laws
  • Exercise the duties of the President in his/her absence, or when requested by the President to do so
  • Assume the duties of the President if the presiding President is unable to fulfill his/her duties of office, as determined by 3/4 of the voting members of the SGA
  • Shall assist the President with the administrative responsibilities of the SGA, as deemed necessary by the President
  • Serve as the Student Trustee Alternate
  • Assume the role and duties of the Student Trustee, if the presiding Student Trustee is unable to fulfill his/her duties
  • Conduct all impeachment hearings, except in the case of their own impeachment
  • Shall report the results of all student elections officially at the next meeting of the SGA after the election has been held
  • Serve as an ambassador for Heartland Community College as needed
  • Not serve as a club liaison during their term of office
  • Have no voting power at an SGA Senate Meeting, unless exercising the duties of the SGA President, and then being limited to the voting powers afforded the SGA President
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
SGA Secretary
  • Prepare agenda for all Student Senate meetings; a copy of the agenda must be posted outside of the SGA Office, and emailed to all SGA Executives and Senators and the SGA advisor, at least 24 hours to the appropriate SGA Meeting
  • Record the minutes during meetings, and report the previous meeting¹s minutes to the SGA
  • Notify members and students of all meetings and activities of the SGA, at the direction of the President and/or SGA Advisor(s)
  • Keep a record of attendance at all SGA Executive Board and Student Senate meetings, and report cumulative absences to the President and Director of Student Development monthly
  • Maintain a file of all records and correspondence of the SGA, and place copies of all records, minutes, and outgoing correspondence on file in the SGA Office as well as make available to members of the SGA, and to the media and/or H.C. Director of Marketing upon written request, for public or other necessary use
  • Draft and submit press releases (in conjunction with Heartland¹s Public Relations Person) whenever possible to all are newspapers
  • Attend SGA meetings, as outlined in the attendance policy portion of the SGA by-laws.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Heartland Community College as needed
  • Not serve as a club liaison during their term of office
  • Have no voting power at an SGA Senate Meeting
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
Student Trustee
  • Attend all Heartland Community College Board of Trustees' meetings, both regular and special, of the District 540 Board of Trustees when appointed as a nonvoting member of the Board of Trustees and as representative of the student body at large by expressing the interests, needs, expectations, and goals of the SGA, and in turn, the Student Body, at said meetings
  • Attend SGA meetings, as outlined in the attendance policy portion of the SGA by-laws
  • Report minutes of the Board of Trustees' meetings at the following SGA meeting in a monthly report of District 540 Board of Trustees deliberations and actions to the SGA
  • Act as a liaison between the SGA and the Heartland Community College Board of Trustees
  • Prepare a monthly written report on the happenings within the Student Life program to be distributed to the members of the HCC District 504 Board of Trustees and the Director of Student Development
  • Serve as an ambassador for Heartland Community College as needed
  • Attend majority of the Illinois Community College Board meetings as the ICCB-SAC representative for Heartland Community College, and one Illinois Board of Higher Education-Student Advisory Committee meeting
  • To adhere to the stipulations given within the context of the Student Trustee Referendum and other corresponding pertinent documents
  • Assist in the training of their successor as Student Trustee as to their roles and responsibilities after their successor is selected and prior to being seated at the April Board of Trustees meeting
  • Not serve as a club liaison during their term of office
  • Have no voting power at an SGA Senate meeting
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
HAC President
  • Attend all Heartland Activities Committee meetings, weekly advisor meetings  events, unless excused by an Advisor and following constitution attendance policy
  • Generate agendas and facilitate weekly executive board meetings
  • Help Advisor in planning semester event calendars and executive board meeting times
  • With Advisor, plan at least one retreat per semester to discuss organization growth plan, collect input for the following semester calendar and foster team development
  • Serve as organization lead for all Heartland Activities Committee events which includes delegating and overseeing that tasks are being completed
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
HAC Vice President
  • Attend all Heartland Activities Committee meetings, weekly advisor meetings and events, unless excused by an Advisor and following constitution attendance policy
  • Serve as a representative and voice for external members of Heartland Activities Committee to the Executive Board by organizing recruitment tables and communicating opportunities to get involved
  • Generate surveys to collect feedback and preference on organization sponsored events
  • Work with Marketing Producer to create promotional materials of organization involvement
  • Contribute to the promotion of continued leadership by helping the advisor coordinate the Heartland Activities Committee executive board interview and (if applicable) selection process for following academic year
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
HAC Marketing Director
  • Attend all Heartland Activities Committee meetings, weekly advisor meetings and events, unless excused by an Advisor and following constitution attendance policy
  • Develop a marketing calendar to publicize all Heartland Activities Committee events before the start of the semester
  • Collect event detail information from President at least three weeks in advance
  • Discuss and implement marketing strategies working with all Heartland Activities Committee members using, but not limited to, flyer design and distribution, social media outlets, and marketing requests
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
HAC Secretary
  • Attend all Heartland Activities Committee meetings, weekly advisor meetings and events, unless excused by an Advisor and following constitution attendance policy
  • Serve as organization's contact delegate for performer contracts, invoices and budget information
  • Record and save all meeting minutes, agenda, publicity and event planning documents in an electronic file
  • Serve a minimum of five office hours per week in the SGA Office to complete required duties and to be available to HCC students
