Heartland Community College baseball and softball teams are each off to a hot start and are climbing the ranks of the NJCAA.

After getting off to a 20-5 start, the Hawks baseball team was ranked 10th in the nation for NJCAA DII.

Johnny Butler leads the team in hits, runs, home runs and stolen bases. Brett Wicklund and Antonio Saldana lead the pitching staff with matching 5-0 records.

“We’ve got a tremendous group of sophomores who have provided excellent leadership through the first part of the year,” said Head Baseball Coach Brian Furlong. “We’re looking forward to playing the most challenging portion of our schedule over the next few weeks and continuing to prepare for the opportunity to host the Region 254 Tournament.”

Heartland’s softball team is also tearing it up in the first half of the season. A six game winning streak pushed Hawks Softball to a 19-6 record and a ranking of 14th in the nation for NJCAA DII.

Elexis Swartzentruber is ranked second in the nation in home runs and leads the team in HRs, runs and slugging percentage. Teammates Nicole Grazioli and Gabbi Uhrin also have hot bats with matching .567 batting averages (tied for 10th in the nation).

“I’m extremely pleased with how our season has gone to this point,” said head Softball Coach Steve Leverton. “We are excited for the second half and are looking forward to the challenge of competing for a conference championship.”

Both teams have a strong record in conference play. The Hawks baseball team is 9-3 in the MWAC and the Hawks softball squad is in the MWAC lead with a 10-2 conference record.
