The Alumni Association (HCCAA) will yearly recognize someone who through their accomplishments, both personally and professionally, personifies the values of the College which include a "can-do" attitude, a respect for diversity, and ethical decision-making among others.

2011 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

The 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient is an example of someone who found success professionally and who represents Heartland's "can-do" attitude through his community volunteer work. Donny Bounds ('95) is now Chief Operating Officer of the Millennium Pain Center which has six sites in Illinois and one in Barcelona Spain. He is also an adjunct professor at Heartland Community College and he was nominated by Assistant Professor Teresa Novy who says he served as her mentor and encouraged her to never give up, even with she found challenges balancing coursework with family life.

Bounds serves president on the Mennonite College of Nursing Alumni Board and as a team captain for McLean County Relay for Life. Additionally, he is a camp counselor for Children/Families with HIV/AIDS and a member of the McLean County AIDS Task Force along with participating in the McLean County Health Department's Medical Reserve Corps as a volunteer nurse.

Bounds told the 207 graduates at commencement May 13 that it's hard to believe that not so long ago, Heartland students were learning in church basements and malls and that people didn't believe the community college was needed.  He then challenged students to live a life of reflection and meaning – to learn from each situation.  Bounds quoted self help guru Steven Covey, "Seek first to understand before being understood." He added, "Always look for a win-win situation."

In final reflection, Bounds urged graduates that they will be successful if they can answer in the affirmative the question, "Did I find joy in my life and did I bring joy to others."
