Heartland students and the public are invited to attend the 2016 State of the Union (SOTU) watch party at Illinois State University on Tuesday, January 12 from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. The event features a live tweet up, interactive polling, expert analysis, panel discussions and free food.

The American Democracy Project (ADP), The Democracy Commitment (TDC) and iCitizen are all joining to sponsor a live webcast of the party to almost 500 campuses around the country.

Heartland has been a member of TDC since 2012. The group has hosted several activities to promote civic engagement, such as community forums, democracy education and most recently, the Human Library.

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Sarah Diel-Hunt, serves as the campus coordinator for TDC at Heartland. She says the upcoming watch party is an opportunity for the entire community to engage in the presidential priorities that affect the path of country.

“It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is,” she said. “The watch party is an opportunity to discuss, learn and participate in non-partisan political engagement.”

There’s sure to be a lot to talk about. According to some reports, it’s expected President Barack Obama’s final SOTU will focus on gaining support for his remaining priorities such as gun control and closing the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Those interested in live tweeting during the SOTU can bring their own devices, although it is not required. The dedicated hashtag for the event is #iSOTU16.
