Statement on Adult Education Task Force Recommendations

February 7, 2018

The statewide Adult Education Strategic Plan submitted to the governor and General Assembly by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) task force reinforces the importance of post-secondary education for individuals and the resulting economic benefits for the state of Illinois.

Adult education programs offer a crucial step in the pathway that connects students to jobs. The state’s five year strategic plan promotes programs that go beyond English and mathematics literacy and offer career readiness skills preparing students for the workforce.

The important role that Heartland Community College’s Adult Education programs play in the economic well-being of Central Illinois should be considered when addressing the funding needs of these programs.

Heartland Community College’s Adult Education options include the Integrated Career and Academic Preparation System (ICAPS). Students develop work-ready skills by earning a Business Office Technology certificate while studying for a high school equivalency diploma or improving their English language skills.

As Heartland continues to help adult learners build the vital skills needed to get jobs and build relationships with community partners to help connect Adult Education students with the workplace, we urge our representatives in Illinois government to fully support these community-focused efforts.

Heartland Community College urges the governor and General Assembly to recognize the integral nature of the strategic plan recommendations by ensuring Adult Education programs are funded in an appropriate and consistent manner every year.
