Heartland Phi Beta Lambda members place in national competition

July 3, 2019

Two Heartland Community College students posted top-ten finishes in the Phi Beta Lambda national business competition this summer.

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is a national student business organization that prepares members for careers in business. Members of PBL can compete in a variety of categories at the state and national level.

Students who placed first or second in state competition earlier this spring advanced to represent Heartland at the PBL National competition in San Antonio, TX, June 23-28. Heartland students competed against over 1,300 students representing colleges and universities from 35 U.S. states.

Two students returned from San Antonio with top-ten finishes in the competition.

Imani Sanchez – 2nd Place, Client Services

Sarah Hastings – 4th Place, Retail Management & 8th Place, Marketing Concepts

“Heartland students have placed at Nationals five years running, which is every year we have competed,” said Phi Beta Lambda advisor Linda Lambert. “As impressive as the students have been in competition, what we cannot measure is the relationships and connections that are made during this journey. They are a part of something more than attending classes. PBL students have represented the College in a great way.”

Heartland PBL officers Meredith King and Kevin O’Donnell also attended the conference.

The mission of Phi Beta Lambda is to provide leadership training and service opportunities to students in any major.

At PBL conferences, students compete and attend workshops as well as listen to keynote speakers. Through this Leadership Conference and Competition, students apply what they learn in the classroom.

Each month, Heartland’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter invites local business leaders to speak about entrepreneurship, networking, interviewing skills, business success and failures, leadership skills, and goal setting. It is this type of partnership and professional support that Phi Beta Lambda provides for their student and professional members.
