  • CHEM 241: Organic Chemistry I

    Prerequisite(s)
    -Completion of CHEM 162 with a grade of C or better

    This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of organic chemistry, including the structure, isomerism, bonding, and IUPAC nomenclature of various classes of hydrocarbons. Reaction mechanisms and reactivity principles for acid-base, substitution, elimination and addition reactions, as well as an introduction to various spectroscopic techniques, are discussed. Each week, a three-hour laboratory period is used to reinforce the lecture material and to introduce students to organic purification, characterization and synthesis techniques.
