Heartland Hawk Film Fest at Normal Theater May 8-9

April 26, 2024

Heartland Community College is kicking off their two-day film festival with a new name and at a new location this year.

The newly-named Heartland Hawk Film Festival will be held Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the historic Normal Theater.

The festival kicks off on May 8 at 6:00 p.m., with a screening of Greener Pastures, a documentary directed by Samuel-Ali Mipoorian. The film takes an urgent and intimate look at American farming, told through the stories of farmers living at the intersection of climate change, industrialization, and a mental health crisis.

The Heartland Filmmakers Showcase follows on May 9 at 6:00 p.m. with a two-hour lineup of short films from former and current Heartland students.

Awards will be given at the end of Thursday evening for the best contributions in various categories, determined by a panel of judges, and for an audience favorite award, determined on-site by festival attendees.

The new name is the result of a competition held earlier this year through the Heartland Community College Student Government Association.  Students Aemun Lopeyok and Latimer Losey both received a movie-themed gift basket for their respective winning contributions to the contest.

Work selected for the festival is judged by a panel of Heartland professors. Admission is free.
